Of all the cats we have right now, there are two that worry me the most, Snowflake and Whoopi.
Whoopi’s story is one of the hardest we’ve ever seen. She was rescued as a tiny kitten after being attacked by a huge dog. That dog bit her head, leaving two enormous holes in her skull. The first challenge was simply to save her life.
We stabilized her, fought to control the pain, and little by little, she began to recover. But soon after, something terrible happened. The bacteria from the dog’s bite caused a severe diphtheria infection. Whoopi spent months fighting for her life, enduring long treatments and endless rounds of antibiotics.
Eventually, she made it through. She survived.
But her skull never fully healed. The infection left behind a large opening that connects directly to her nasal cavity, a space where bacteria continues to grow, creating constant infections and inflammation.
It’s a disaster. And we can’t leave it like this any longer.
Next week, Whoopi will undergo a CT scan. Once we have the results, I will meet with my friend Dr. Jorge Llinás, one of the best surgeons in the world, to determine what kind of reconstructive surgery can be done to close that gap once and for all.
For now, this is where we are. Whoopi continues to fight, and we will keep fighting with her.
