For the past few weeks, we haven’t been able to rescue another dog.
The reason is simple and painful: our veterinary bills are overwhelming.
But this weekend, I received a call that I couldn’t ignore.
When I looked into this dog’s eyes, I knew one thing for sure:
without us, she was going to die.
So we said yes.
Her name is Iris.
We rescued her yesterday, and she is now at the hospital, fighting for her life.
Look at her face. Really look at it.
Iris is gentle, calm, and incredibly brave. And she needs us.
Iris is suffering from advanced leishmaniasis, left completely untreated.
You can see it in her skin, in her ears, in the condition of her nails.
Her lymph nodes are enlarged. Her body is exhausted. She is dehydrated and anaemic, with haemoglobin levels right at the threshold where a blood transfusion may become necessary.
On top of that, Iris has a torn cruciate ligament.
This means her recovery will not only require medication and long-term treatment for leishmaniasis, but also major orthopedic surgery to repair her leg.
The vets have already started fluids, taken blood samples, and begun the process of stabilising her. Her kidneys are being closely monitored, as they are the organ most at risk with leishmaniasis. For now, the situation is serious but hopeful.
With proper nutrition, treatment, and care, Iris has a chance.
But without it, she doesn’t.
Iris is our Christmas rescue.
She is alive today because we chose not to look away.
