When Iris arrived to us, she was in critical condition.
She was suffering from very advanced leishmaniasis, extremely weak and with barely any strength left. She had gone far too long without treatment, and her life was hanging by a thread.
We decided to fight for her.
From day one, we started specific treatment and constant veterinary monitoring. The first weeks were slow, but Iris began to show something essential: the will to live.
A Change You Can Already See
Today Iris returned to the clinic for follow-up blood tests to check how her leishmaniasis levels are evolving and to run a full CBC. We also checked sodium and potassium levels, which are crucial in dogs who have been so compromised.
The change is clear.
Her expression is different.
Her skin is more hydrated, her coat softer, and her overall condition has improved significantly.
In just ten days she has gained 200 grams, a very important amount for a dog who arrived completely exhausted. She eats well, has a good appetite, and is calm and trusting.
The Next Challenge: A Torn Cruciate Ligament
Although the leishmaniasis is responding to treatment, Iris still faces an important challenge. She arrived with a torn cruciate ligament, an injury that causes pain and limits her mobility.
If her progress continues, we hope she will soon be ready for surgery. Before that, she needs to gain a bit more weight and be fully stabilized.
Looking Ahead
Iris still has a road ahead of her, but today we can say something very important:
she is no longer on the brink of death.
She has strength, she is responding to treatment, and she has a future.
