I have terrible news…
Yesterday morning, Canela tried to stand up and couldn’t.
Her left hind leg had stopped responding, and she had lost sensation in part of her body. We rushed her straight to the hospital.
The X-rays revealed a serious problem in the lower part of her spine. Her nerves are being compressed, affecting the movement and feeling in her hind legs.
Canela was already living with enormous limitations. She has only one front leg, and that leg was reconstructed with a metal plate. Yet she adapted. She kept going. She learned to enjoy her quiet life surrounded by people who love her.
Now she is hospitalized, receiving medication to reduce the inflammation and keep her comfortable. Over the next few days, we will learn whether she can recover any sensation or mobility.
Surgery may be possible, but it would be a major operation with very uncertain results. Our priority is not to put Canela through more suffering. It is to keep her safe, comfortable and free from pain.
But we need help with her hospitalization, tests, medication and care.
Canela never found the special home she needed, so we became her family.
And now she needs her family more than ever.
