We were told Aida had spent three days injured in a field. But when we reached the hospital, we found dead tissue, maggots and exposed bone. Her paw is destroyed. It cannot be saved.
I have spent twenty years rescuing animals with devastating injuries. From what I have seen, I suspect this wound has been developing for more than a week, perhaps two. We cannot date it precisely, but those three days may represent only part of her suffering.
We have to amputate. But as we await surgery, a potentially fatal complication has emerged.
Her expression is changing. The muscles in her face are tightening. Her body is becoming rigid. The team has identified clinical signs consistent with tetanus and has already begun treatment.
Tetanus affects the nervous system. It can cause severe muscle spasms, prevent swallowing and compromise breathing. In severe cases, it can be fatal. That is why Aida needs treatment and close monitoring in hospital. Treating the wound alone is not enough.
She is receiving antibiotics, medication to control the rigidity, pain relief and supportive care while the vets prepare for surgery.
We need to remove the damaged limb, but amputation will not immediately stop the toxin’s effects on her nervous system. Treatment and nursing care will have to continue after the operation.
We have helped other dogs survive tetanus. We want to give her that same chance. To do that, we need your help.
Your donation will help cover her surgery, hospital stay, treatment and rehabilitation. We want her to get through this and enjoy a life free from this pain, cared for and loved.
Please give whatever you can. Every donation helps.
Donate now for her surgery and treatment. Help us save Aida.
