Today Wendy had her first medicated bath.
For most dogs, a bath is nothing. For Wendy, it was probably the first real relief she has felt in a very long time.
Her skin is raw. Her eyes are inflamed. Her coat was falling off in clumps. She was thirsty, hungry, exhausted, and so patient with us that it hurts to watch.
Wendy has severe leishmaniasis. It has been left untreated for far too long, and her whole body shows it.
After the bath, we went back into medicine. We did an echocardiogram to see if the parasites in her blood had already damaged her heart or lungs.
That was the fear.
And there was good news.
The damage we were afraid of is not there. She has a murmur, probably because of the anemia, but we are not seeing the severe cardiopulmonary damage that would have made everything much worse.
Right now we are dealing with microfilariae, tiny larvae moving in her bloodstream. It is serious, but it can be treated.
Wendy has started treatment for leishmaniasis and for the parasites in her blood. She will remain in hospital.
She needs medication, monitoring, tests, care, and time. None of this is quick. None of this is cheap. But today, I truly felt we found her in time.
Under all that ruined skin and dead hair, there is the sweetest dog.
She wags her tail. She looks at you. She trusts.
