Tina looks different today.
After her bath, she changed tremendously.
But this was not cosmetic.
It was medical.
The medicated shampoo is helping disinfect her skin, calm the infection and soothe the pain. As the crusts come off, we are seeing what was underneath: wounds, raw skin, inflamed tissue and lesions all over her body.
We cannot rush this.
If we remove too much too fast, we hurt her.
So we are going slowly. Carefully. One step at a time.
Tina was scared, but she behaved beautifully. She let us touch her. She let us wash her. She let us help her.
And for the first time, we could really see her.
But Tina is not healed.
Her skin is only the visible part of the problem.
The disease is inside.
Leishmaniasis has been attacking her body for a long time. She is anemic, her lymph nodes are enlarged, and her skin is in such terrible condition that even the next stage of treatment has to be planned carefully.
Before starting Glucantime, the veterinarians are waiting for cytology and protein electrophoresis results. We need to know exactly where we stand and give her skin a little time to improve.
Catching Tina was only the beginning.
