Have a good look at her… EDNA was rescued from the feet of the largest active volcano in Europe, mount Etna, in Sicily.
They dumped her there, thin as a rake, cross-eyed and with something odd about her head. EDNA HAS HYDROCEPHALUS, WATER ON THE BRAIN.
Last week we went to get her and brought her to our hospital.
We have just performed a CT scan and the results are devastating. EDNA has water in 80% of her brain cavity. THE PRESSURE IS HUGE AND HER BRAIN HAS BECOME ATROPHIC.
Her status is so severe that the only option is to open the skull and insert a valve (peritoneal ventricular shunt) to regulate the pressure, which will gradually take the fluid to the peritoneum, where it will be absorbed by the body.
PLEASE LOOK AT HER VIDEO
This is a highly sophisticated surgery that is rarely performed on strays. Who would go this far to save a dog that nobody wanted?
We would… and that is what we are going to do.
Just imagine the tremendous pressure and pain that EDNA has gone through in her short life… THIS SURGERY IS HER ONLY CHANCE…
P.S. We are fighting to save her. When she has recovered, EDNA will need a wonderful home where she can live the life she deserves…
